The hood is off and I've been using freezer bags  I'd rather not take the trans out because it'll just be staying with the car. Should I take it out or just undo the bell housing bolts and take just the motor out?

If you leave the trans in be sure to safely support the front so it does not drop, also do not let the Torq conv. fall out and hit the floor. Go slow and BE SAFE!

What would be the best to support it with? Just a block of wood or what?

Not sure I always pull trans w/eng. then separate them on floor.Just easier that way for me (also lets me clean and paint everything). But maybe a peice of chain bolted to car running under trans? Anyone else here have any tips? A wire running thru bellhousing bolt holes in front of T/Q to keep it in place.

I have only left the trans in the car once while pulling an engine. Won't do it again as I find it is much easier to pull and install them together.

But if you leave the trans in, you can use use a jack under the trans while pulling the engine then use a coat hanger or wire attached from the trans to the tower braces to support it. While the engine is out it is a good time to replace the front transmission seal. Make sure you understand the proper installation method for a torque converter.
Don't forget to clean the engine compartment.

The trans JUST got rebuilt, I have even driven it 10 miles yet.. Will I still need to replace that seal?

hopefully they did that in the rebuilt, probably has a new or rebuilt torque converter as well. like me and everyone else is saying though its alot easier to bolt the trans to the engine outside of the car and install it as one package rather then trying to line the block up with bell inside the car and get it all bolted up.

if you leave the trans dont support it on its pan and crush it in.

Yeah it got a rebuilt converter but I opted to buy a new stall converter when I went on my shopping spree. (I figured I'd do it right the first time)

So if anyone wants a fresh converter I can give it to you for cheap :)

I guess I'll take the trans out with the engine, it seems to be pretty unanimous on that decision.

I vote for that option as well.

I always pull the engine and trans together, regardless of if I am actually going to mess with the transmission or not. It is not that much more work, and like others said, it is much easier to mate the engine and transmission together when they are out of the car.

get a yoke plug, and tape the hell out of it, of find an old yoke that fits it and use wire to hold it in place before you do anything, other than that, pretty straight foward

Well it came out last night.. Now its time to wash and paint the entire engine bay  I may need to relocate the battery to the back because the little ledge that it sits on is badly rusted out :(

I took some pictures but I couldn't really take pictures while the process was going on because I was too busy trying to do all the stuff, and my hands were way to dirty to touch a camera. But I do have a few and I'll post them when I get home from work. Thank god for awesome friends willing to help out
