I think I asked for one for a 95 mustang. It bolts right in, is a gear reduction type, weighs about five or six pounds less and it's an easy mod to make it work. It has a solenoid on it that you have to jump.
oh yeah! And as a bonus, it's easy to get in and out with the headers in place. While I'm thinking of it, I used header bolts to bolt my starter in. No one will ever see it, but it looks cool and I know they're there.
I do believe it fits both. I tried to crawl under the car last night and take a picture, but the front is just too low to get in there and see what I'm doing. The only problem with this swap is you'll have to absorb the core cost unless you get one of the same starter out of a junkyard for a few bucks. The local Napa gave me partial core credit for my big one.
really great info here guys. I am just absorbing all the knowledge. Yes those starters are a bear with headers. Terry, I couldnt agree more with the having fun part. I wanted to go racing today, but I am fighting a slipped disc in lower back and cant even go out and work on the car. So here I am at puter gaining knowledge. Dan
I put the 95 Mustang starter on today, much easier to install thats for sure. I put the jumper wire on from the "hot" wire incoming and jumped it to the open terminal on the solenoid. It starts the car fine but I get a whining noise for about 1-2seconds after it starts like the bendix is still spinning, I don't think its huting anything I just don't like the noise. Any thoughts on that Ray?
Wll Scotty it's a bolt in. but you will have to put a jumper wire between the little stud and the battery side of the solenoid. No need to compliment my obvios artistic brilliance, but here's a diagram:
11 sec.,will it let you delete the pic,"you screwed up"? it will not let me delete posts.i am going to check on one of the 95" starters tomorrow. thanks...frank...
Thats how I wired it Ray but I still have that noise after it fires for 1-2 seconds...something spinning or not disengaging like it should
Rick- I think these starters are sometimes a bit sticky coming out, although it may be the ignition switch. I've noticed the same thing with mine once in a while. try manually turning you ignition switch back to run as soon as it fires. If that works, then probably lubing the switch on the column will fix it. It doesn't happen all the time with mine, so I don't worry about it.
I'll give that a shot Ray...if it doesn't work I may just rewire it to use the solenoid on the starter only and see if that makes a difference. Having to engae to solenoids to fire could be the prob. I do like the starter though...hits hard and fast and a breeze to get by the headers.
Yep she works nice. Also has no trouble with a high compression motor. Mine's 11:1 and my starter spins like there's no plugs in it. Really easy on the battery.
