Well the lobes were worn and I was getting a different gap on point. I set it to one lobe first and drove it and it was bad. I checked the gap and it was way off. bumped it around and got a wide range of gaps. Thats when i said lets just go right to the dwell meter.
The distributor lobes shouldn't be worn at all, the points have a plastic rubbing block that's not going to wear a steel lobe.If it did, then the distributor needs replacing if you continue to run points. (the Pertronix will have a magnet to slip over the distributor cam, eliminating that aspect) Be that as it may, the dwell would change too between lobes if they were that worn.. Setting dwell is simply a more accurate way to set the points by going on how long they stay closed (or is it open, I forget) to allow the coil to build it's charge.
Yes the lobes were un even. Used the dwell meter to find a happy medium in the fluctuations. It wasnt moving the needle much but we decided to get a pertonix instead of changing the distributor. and the points were only a few months old.
