Dan, my '75 has the dark gray speckled vinyl mat that looks exactly like the one you just bought. It is somewhat form-fitting, also with slits and has been in the family since new, so I know it's original. My '72 Comet didn't have any mat but could have been removed by a previous owner.

I recently purchased a dark gray carpeted mat for my Comet from autokrafters that is form fitting and looks very good. For the rest of the trunk area instead of buying that expensive speckled paint from Eastwood, I went to Home Depot and bought a can of that fake stone paint. Looks just like the speckled stuff at a third of the price.

My 75 has the gray felt. It is either form fitting, or it has just been in there so long that it form fitted itself.

On spatter paint, watch out for water based versions, several brands are.
I saw a friend's car rot out when he put water based spatter paint in the trunk and some other inner panels. It was pretty obvious, spatter painted areas=extreme rust through, no spatter paint=no rust.

I think the mat in my 1973 Grabber is original. It is yellow & gray plaid. My 1969 Maverick had a black and white plaid trunk mat. It was standard because the only option I bought on that car was the AM radio, and I bought that car new in mid-69. I don't remember what my 1976 Maverick had, but in the mid-80's I bought a 1973 4-door and that one had a plaid trunk mat like the one in my current Grabber. That Grabber has the original spare tire, so I think the mat is too.

My '73 4 door has just a solid grey mat. Don't know if it's original or not.
