I had my car on cardomain.com and Mike (M.A.V) left a comment saying I should check it out... Been hooked ever since
The internets brought me here...!!...somewhere in the late 90's..(I forget now), but I've lived in this house since 1995, and have had the internet since then.
I was in the market to buy a Maverick, searched Maverick on Yahoo, and here I am. Got alot good information before I bought my car, and still getting good information. I have meet some real good people also!
Way back in the 90's, you were probably more likely to hear it called the world wide web! I remember when that was a huge catchphrase.
I picked up my Maverick in late 1989 and worked on getting parts by looking for ads in old car magazines and sending for catalogs. Once I got my first computer in the 90's, I started searching on line for Maverick information. I found this site in it's very first incarnation and joined right up. I didn't first use the name mav1970 but used my full name instead.
I have liked Mavericks since I first saw one as a kid. I still remember the first one I noticed, which I now know was a '70-'72 non-Grabber, 2-door. At ten years old I didn't know very much about cars, but I was very much interested in them. I knew the Maverick was small and light, American, RWD, (as all "real" cars were in my mind) had a great shape, was V8 powered, and I knew that those things made that car awesome. After I [allegedly] grew up I still thought they were awesome, even though by that time I knew Mavericks were cheap economy cars in their day, and arguably not quite worthy of muscle/pony car status. Didn't care. I knew my original unbiased first impression of the car was genuine, and that any sane person who's into cars but doesn't know Mavericks aren't supposed to be cool would probably see them the same way I did. When I got an opportunity to get my hands one one, I got excited. The expensive stuff (engine rebuild, paint, some interior) was already done. It was basically somebody's aborted project. It needed a lot of work but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. The trouble was, my parking is limited, and any project car I take on needs to double as a driver. So if I wanted this Maverick I'd have to get rid of a perfectly solid, clean, reliable, air conditioned Camaro. Had to think about it, "Do I want it that bad? Better do some research, see what I'm really getting into, because I'll have to make a daily driver out of this..." That's how I found the MMB. I joined up and spent weeks poring over archived posts. (Coincidentally, the car I was looking at also happened to be for sale here.) I was really trying to talk myself out of it, but the more I learned the more I knew there's really nothing I can't fix on a Maverick with a little bit of information from this board. So, I swapped the Camaro for the Maverick. Another car, another forum... I became a ghost on thirdgen.org and started becoming a regular here as I fixed up the car and made it my own. Made plenty of friends along the way and continue to make more. I think I'll be around here for a while, both because I can't ever imagine getting rid of my Maverick, and because this is by far the best car forum I've been a member of, and there have been many.
Why im here I bought my Comet last year at a Wisconsin car corral/swap/auction held in Iola WS the 3rd week of July. I really did'nt have this particular car in mind. The guy I got it from had 2 cars for sale; the other being a 71 or 72 Mav. I like the Comets better anyway, esp the rear end. The Mav had a repaint, no pwr accessories and a more radical engine. The Comet had more in line in what I was lookin for. I believe my car has orig paint exc. for the drv side front fender and the hood has been painted. "Fender Bender". The car is vry solid and the price was right. The engine runs great and uses almost no oil. The car had 72177 miles on it when I got it and believe this is org mileage. The engine is not orig. I don't know what vintage sml block it is and really don't care - It does just what I want it to "PURR'S LIKE A KITTEN" I did'nt need 750cfm's, 411 gears seeing I just plan to CRUIZE. A Comet/Maverick wud not have been my first choice but in the 10 months I have owned the car it has grown on me. I like it. In 1973 I bought a new LTD Brougham, all options. I did'nt even consider these cars then. My how time changes things. Anyway, to make a long story short - I did a web search and found out there were plenty of folks w/ same type of car and I joined here immediately. My closing comment: I am fortunate to have found this forum. I think the adminstrators do a superb job of maintaining an orderly, respectful means of networking. I was new to networking B4 I came here. I was impressed by those who welcomed me the first few days I was on here. I was only admonished/reminded by one person for "THREAD-JACKING" and at that time I really did'nt know what that meant. Did'nt bother me - Not thin skin. To be honest I probably communicate more with folks here than anywhere else maybe, except my wife, and I not sure abt that - she has no intrest whatsoever in cars or anything to do with them. LoL I guess I did'nt make it a long story short after all.
A 77 4 dr maverick was the first car I drove cross country. I was 16 then and always wished it was a 2 dr. Just after my 24th bday, I stumbled into a 70 and a 72 for 500 bucks. I googled mav pics to see what was out there and found you guys. I owned the 2 cars for a yr before I made one lousey running car. The last year of using this forum has catipulted my progress far beyond what I ever thought Id get out of my investment. From the 302, to paint and interior, the tech articles and locating parts, you have all been a huge help. Thanx to all of you. I love my car!
I already had my Mustang Sprint and was intrigued with the idea of also owning a Maverick Sprint. So, I googled Ford Maverick Sprint and found this forum. I joined up and lurked around for several months until I came across my Maverick Sprint on Ebay being sold by a member here. I was warmly welcomed by several members and have felt like part of the family ever since. That was before the '71 Maverick Grabber, 2 '72 Comet GT's and a Pinto Sprint came along. My plate runneth over. Thanks, Stefan, for putting together a great site. Jim
I found an ad for a 77 Mercury Comet on Autotrader and googled the car because i thought it looked nice and wanted to know more about it. The second I saw "Maverick/Comet forums" I flipped out all excited because my dad had a amazing 2 dr Mav when I was a kid and I loved that car. I'm so glad this site is here, it's filled with awesome, no B.S information on these cars and that's what I love about it.
