i think we must all have to deal with the rust monster at times ,sounds like you have a good project there. mine is a project just started, but at least i learned to start with a solid car to begin with this time.your lucky to have a solid car to do. wish you all the luck ,keep us all updated. i will with mine, wheels are next for me so i can drive it while im building the stroker motor. gas the way it is, 20mpg and a/c working it might take till next summer?? just bought the billet msd distributor, and looking @those aluminum radiators posted?

Hi all. Got my first Maverick (1971) in 1986 for $1000.00. Completely stock. Ran perfect. Only needed a brake job. Came with five lugs and factory air. Drove that car for almost eight years. Transmission locked up, and thinking selling it and buying a 65 Ford Galaxie would be what I wanted. Wrong. Missed that Maverick as soon as I started driving the klunky old 65 Galaxie.

So, the hunt was on. About a year later, found a 1971 Comet for $200.00. One side was dented up, but soon had a new paint job, and new grill. Drove that until 2000. Rear end went out, and it was one of those sealed ones where you couldn't pull out the pumpkin. Sold it! No regrets, as it was another good car.

Finally, bought my last Maverick (1972 Sprint) in 2000 for $350.00. This car was rough. Lady said she still drove it, and obviously did, as the tags were current. Every freeze plug in the engine was leaking water. She was running air with a single core radiator, and where the xmission cooler connected, the radiator was leaking fluid so there was mud collected in the fins in about a 9" square area. Transmission was slipping. Found about 30 empty fluid cans in the truck where she kept adding xmission fluid while it leaked out the radiator area. Ha ha. Car had surface rust from the coast, where she lived originally. And she was driving this thing like that over the Grapevine in Southern California. I bought it in Central California.

It didn't come with factory air unfortunately, and am presently getting ready to put under-the-dash air in it, as the unit under the dash when I purchased it was trashed.

Now, one thing I always enjoy pointing out about these car is the fact that every one I owned never needed lower end rebuilding, and didn't and don't use oil. These engines are bulletproof. Both the 200 C.I., and the 250 CI, both of which came in the cars I owned.

My Sprint came with a 250 CI. Does have the drivers side mirror that can be operated from the inside.

    Jack

I paid $250 for my '74 Maverick. I had to set the points by eye from .25 to .025 and replaced the fuel pump and then started driving it. It already had new tires, brakes, gas tank and muffler. I spent about $400 more getting it where its at now. This includes small rear bumper swap, Grabber hood & spoiler, sports mirror, new heater core and radiator, correct gas tank, 72 parts car and a bunch of junkyard trips getting small brackets, front fender and chrome trim http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick.html
