My 73 4 door was free, had to go to N.J. and trailer it home. Now that I think about it my 74 2 door was free too, a gift from my brother who was moving to Sweden. I've had two other "freebie" mavs and two I paid for for parts. Cheep? ya I guess I'm cheep.

    Well, let's see...

I paid $600.00 cash for mine (running, drivable, inspected, etc...)

The 99 yr old man I bought it from gave me $150 cash back for TTL/tank of gas...so let's see. that's $450.00

I wrecked it 3 weeks later and Progressive totalled it out for $900.00...so that brings it to -$450.00

and I've spent about $300.00 so far, trying to get it road worthy again...

So right now, Progressive Insurance has paid me About $150.00 to park a Maverick in my backyard.

    :)

THIS JUST IN: The Mav started/ran this week and would probably drive around the block if I put the wheels back on it. The new (old) radiator is in and when I cranked it up, discovered that the Thermostat housing had a micro fracture in it and he Trans Oil coolant line was pierced...so My Maverick spews a beautiful red and flourescent green rainbow when I start it right now.

    :)

Liberty Mutual wouldn't even bother tottaling my '74 Grabber, said it was basically not worth enough to mess with. They did offer to replace it though.

well for me i saw an ad in the paper
    1972 merkeery comet gt
    351 w 4sped 1500.00
and yes it was all spelled that way, well when i got there it looked alittle ruff but i fell in love with it just the way it looked, it had a good stance, well of course it had 4 flat tires and had boxes of junk in it. well no one was home so i had to go back later, it was only like afew hours away.
well when i got back the guy was there he showed me the car, it wasn't running very well ok it had a jug in the engine compartment that he put gas in since the gas tank was messed up and he had a leaky 2bbl on it. well i talked him down to 800.00 but i didn't have it on me so i had to wait a week since he was leaving town, well when i went to go get it i ended up having to pay 1000.00 i guess i couldn't hide my desire to well, the tires were dry rotted so they wouldn't hold any air, so i had to go buy four tires and i drove it to this shop that was in that town and payed them to fix it, well that was another 700.00 besides the gas tank it needed a complete brake replacement, everything was rusted and not fixable. well it still ran really bad so i took it home and replaced the cam, intake put a four barrel, timing chain ect, it ran good for like one day, i mean it scared me i was going um well i don't know the speedometer doesn't work well it felt like the car was going to fly, well any way it ended up needing main bearings, and anyway that was 2 years ago, so know i'm sinking in another 2000.00 in it and without replacing the rear end it should be a 12 sec 1/4 mile car. so i guess my first comet is costing me 3700.00 and it still needs a driver door and a paint job

My 72 Comet cost me $200.00 18 years ago. Gave that one to Inline6 (got him into the Mav/Comet scene) !! Then I went back to Mopars till I got my 69 1/2 about 3 months ago.

71 grabber red and black; 74 2dr LDO comet
When i was in High School my grandparents were unhappy with the falling apart death trap VW i was driving so they gave me my grandmothers 4door LDO 73 mav, that they bought new, for free. It had factory a/c, 302 and was in excellent condition, and i had always liked the car. drove it for about three years before the wife squeezed it between a tree and a brick wall.
a few months into my marriage, the wife and i were talking about cars and i told her one of my favorite cars had been my uncles 70 mav red and black with a 302. the next day she was walking to the school she was attending and saw the grabber sitting in the parking lot for sale. bought it that weekend for $1200. that was pretty much my whole savings. ended up replacing the radiator within the first year, but that was about it until a good 8 or 9 years later when we had added another 100k of driving to it. at that time a semi backed into it, so i pulled out the hood and replaced the fenders. then i used the insurance money to rebuild/balance the bottom end.drove it only occaisionally until two years ago when i decided to have it repainted and do the top end and transmission. 17 years later and its almost done at around a total of probably 8k for the work i didnt have to do. but its nicer looking and riding than the new focus or subaru that i still couldnt have bought with that much....

In 1982....$250 bucks. The old six burned about a quart a week, kept running for years though.
