I might feel better about drum brakes if everybody else on the road had 'em...

1.) I wud say doing a brake job. My car has fac fr.disk. The drv. side caliper was froze and rr whl cyl was froze and axle grease on left shoe. Right side was ok. Replaced all but master>> that will be changed to power setup soon. Stops much better.
2.) Differential rebuild : all bearing, spyder gears the works- to the back plates and drive shaft balance. No more roar or vibes.
3.) White face gauges and 4 white Auotmeter gauges: and bulb replace in dash cluster.
4.) New Carpet: no more musty smell.
5.) Stero: new Dual HD rx, 10"sub, RF-300 Sub amp, and 2* 5.25 kickpanel spkrs. Sounds great.
6.) Mufflers: replaced Cherry Bombs came w/ car. Put some quiet muffs, now, I can appreciate my stero. Actually that was the first thing I did.
7.) Rear spring: 4 leaf the ones on the car gone. May remove a leaf for better ride. Don't need the 4th. leaf >>>Just Cruzin.>>>:drive:

Cragars and meaty tires. It gave the Comet a whole new look.

Bucket seats. The uncomfortable, hard, slippery, HOT 90 degree angle vinyl bench seat is in the yard slowly turning green.

Dual exhaust. Now it sounds fast at least.

Floor shifter. No more grandma column lever.

10SI alternator. Now I can drive my car the 30 miles a day to work and back.

Removing the A/C system. My engine bay is a lot less cluttered.

Improvising a decent looking grille to replace the broken hard to find/expensive original.

Whiteface gauges/new bulbs in the dash. Now I can see them at night and everyone knows white gauges add at least 10 HP.

CD player. I was grooving with the 8 track but the ridicule here was humiliating so I went big city and installed a CD deck and new speakers.

I have to re-answer. The two best things I ever did were

    1) larger aluminum radiator
    and 2) correct rear u-joint.

My first answer (3.80 gears with spool) was more fun and gave me a seat-in-pants improvement, but these other two solved 2 long-running problems I had that cost me hundreds (maybe more) trying to fix, but needed to be done correctly to fix the issues. I fought overheating for years before putting in a new aluminum radiator, and fought this vibration for years until i found that I was running the wrong u-joint. Both required replacing all kinds of parts that did nothing to fix the problem, and cost me lots of wasted money.

The final fixes were actually pretty cheap, and fixed the issues permanently.

Ok guys I know the disc brake thing is a biggie but I think I have the single best upgrade. When I bought my car it had bias ply tires on all 4 wheels. I cant even begin to explain what a battle it was just to keep the car in a straight line on the road. It pulled with every little change in the road. Two hands were a must. Getting those off the car and the new radials on was by far the biggest improvement to my car. It went from white knuckle two handed driving to two finger driving.

    Manual Steering

    Hi Mavdragger,
I been notcing some folks mention changing their power steering to manual. I am wondering what is the advantage of that? My car has PS and I'll admit it is vry light feel compared to my 99 Windstar and 07 Buick Lucerne. It took me a month or so to really get use to it but now - it's ok.
Im wondering what wud be the benefit of changing other than eliminating a lot of extra parts.
