But your forgetting the price of pads, having the rotors turned, rebuilding the calipers, new brake hoses etc.... The only thing I don't like about aftermarket kits is that you cant just got to a parts store and get a part if something fails. Which is only a problem if you daily drive the car, But I like the convenience of the OEM kit.
That's why you pick out the good parts with low mileage and fresh pads. Either way it's still less than $100 for OEM rear disc. :Handshake
haha I once did that, I got a pair of brake pads that looked 95% new. Then they fell apart in a week, I learned that lesson well. But they were duralast so no surprise there. If I found some Napa ones or raybestos/hawk that looked new I'd probably run them.
Yea, like my Comet I've yet to have to touch the brakes on this car. Bought it used, sitting behind an old lady's house 4-5 years ago. I've bought many sets of Granada front brake sets that had serviceable pads, rotors and calipers, many looked like they had just been changed out before the car's were parked.
you would be suprised how many people do...brake jobs, replace alts. and starters before they junk a car. every brake swap i've done, the rotors, calipers, and pads were new...most had good usable...brake lines. note...don't forget to get the fitting off the hard line... ...:Handshake... my junkyard parts...plus...new brake line/seals.
Just to be clear, Our cars use the same Brackets as big bearing 9" correct? At least that's what we modify to use.
Crown vic rears do not bolt on. The bracket to axle mount is significantly different. I used 03 Sport Trac rear discs which are the same as 95-01 Explorer. The ones that I know of that should have the same mounting and axle backspacing are: 95-01 Explorers 03 Explorer Sport Trac 97-03 Explorer Sport 11 Rangers, but I haven't taken them apart to measure backspacing yet. I had to slot the holes slightly for the bracket to match the bolt spacing on my rear axle and I made a spacer to make up for the thickness of the bracket so that the bearing has the proper amount of clamp load to retain it in its bore, otherwise it could slide in and out about an 1/8".
I've been trying to find a JY set around here but no one here will sell the backing plates etc. without trying to sell the full rear. I just need the backing plates and can get the rest of the brake stuff off a rear here but because you have to pop the axles to get the plates no one here wants to bother or let me bother. If anyone has a spare set I'd be interested.
Me too...I would be willing to take a set if there are a couple sets out there. Mostly because I don't want to be in a junkyard this time of year in SE Texas.
8" use the same as a Small bearing 9", but I've heard there's more than two types for the 9". So that gets confusing, for the most part there's just the two popular types.
There were at least three sized bearing hosing bolt patterns for the 9's. Small bearing (like the 8") then big bearing, then the big bearing "torino" housing, this is the one if I'm not mistaken that was copied for the big bearing 8.8's in pickups, vans and the 'sploders.
I have an 8" original axle that came in my car from the factory and an extra 8" housing that I robbed from a 75 4dr Mav. Both have the same mounting dimensions for the backing plate and backspacing from mount face to axle flange face. Neither are 9".
I've heard of others successfully using the late model Crown Vic disc setup on 8" rears, none I recall had issues with them having a different bolt pattern on the brake brackets. Your's could be a unique one, it wouldn't be the first time Ford changed dimensions on a part.
I may be wrong about the late CV. I've got a Marauder that I just put a Wilwood rear kit on, I'll try and measure the caliper bracket next week, time permitting.
