Big Brothers Car My older brother Tom's first car was a 73 Grabber. It was red and white with a 302 and a 3 speed manual transmission. I thought it was the coolest car ever. It was supposed to get passed down to me when my brother went off to college, but it got wrecked just a few weeks before my 17th birthday. believe it or not, it got T boned by a local Doctor whose name was Bone. It seems the good Doctor got a little to drunk and ran a stop sign in his Mercedes hitting my brothers car broadside. My Brother walked away from that one, but the car was a total loss. I ended up getting my grandparents old 1971 4 dr Galaxy 500. It was robin's egg blue, and smelled like old people. Needless to say I was not a happy camper. So here I am, 30 years later and I finally got my Maverick. It's no red and white Grabber, but I like it.
I had been searching for a car, any car really, when my dad suggested that I get a classic since he restores them and could help me. So I hoped on craigslist and the first car I ran across was a 66 mustang, but when I called on it, it had already been bought. So I was thinking about other classics I may be able to get my hands on. A maverick was mentioned, and even though I had been around classics all my life, I had never seen one. So, I googled it and...it was love at first sight!!! I thought it looked like a mini 69 oldsmobile cutlass, which is the car that my parents owned when I was growing up! I had a beautiful round body. Perfect. We live happily ever after.
I decided to get a Maverick ever since I saw my brother, Mark's, 71 and 73 Grabbers. I noticed in a local trading paper that there was a 75 4-door for sale about 30 mins away. Called the guy, was asking $1500, talked him down to $800. That was my everyday driver for almost a year, then traded my truck for a 74 Maverick LDO from the same brother. Worked on it for 2 years, dropped a fresh 302 in it w/ an AOD tranny. Then I got laid off in 2008 and had to sell it. Traded my 75 in for a Jeep Cherokee (got $1500 for my Mav!!!) and I still have the Jeep, but no Mavs... Still gots the Maverick fever though...
Cause I like'm LOL but really I've alwaysliked the idea of a small car with a V8 from the factory. And hell anyone can own a mustang or a camaro. I've always wanted to be different than the average joe.
I started trying to find a Mav about 2 years ago with no luck. Have always been intrigued with the Mav, remember seeing one in the 70s that was plum colored with cragars..........always liked that car. After looking for a while, found a 72 Grabber at the swap meet. Was priced at $5k, above my range. Talked to the guy and finally got it for 3250. Brought it home and been tinkering with it since. It still is in the project stage (needs paint and interior mods) but I love playing with it and always get a lot of positive response and thumbs up when I have it out. It may not be perfect, but it's mine and I don't think I will ever sell it
my older brother Johnny had one in high school. He left it behind when he joined the Air Force and i looked after it for him.(drove it around out here in the country)He took it to Charleston when he was stationed and completely rebuilt the entire car.It was awsome.I bought one befor i even had my license.I worked in my uncles junk yard after school and summer till i was old enough to get a real job pumping gas and paying taxes.HA HA.I have had them ever since and love having them.
My First Car was a 69 Mustang Mach I Fastback, 351 Cleveland 4 speed Jade Green. I loved that car, and had alot of fun in it too. Sure I would love to have it back. So I could sell it for big bucks and buy more Mavericks. Everybody loves Mustangs, but take a drive in your Maverick and you'll have more people come up and ask about your car anywhere in any State. It happens to my wife and I all the time, that's why I love them.
My high school sweetheart's dad's car. (That is what she drove on dates) so I kinda always had a soft spot for them. Dont tell the wife!
i saw one in a car craft magazine and i was hooked i sold my dads 79 malibu back to him(which was the hardest thing i have ever done) and bought one in town for cheap. and i like the look of the car and how u dont see them very often.
My mom owned a used car lot when i was 17 and she bought 2 mavericks. 1 I6 and 1 302 maverick. I somehow convinced her to let me have them and pay her in payments. Time went on and I eventually sold them. But just bought another one here recently
My father called my up at 12AM one night when i was 10 years old while i was watching star wars episode III and said he had just bought me a car....i guess its got a lot of sentimental value
I had a 72 Grabber back in 1991, bought it at an auction. I always liked the looks of the Maverick. Had it for about 6 months and wrapped it around a light pole on RTE 195 in Providence. A few months later I bought a 74 and swapped all the Grabber parts to it. Painted it flat black with a pirate flag on the antenna and new Crager SS rims! Got creamed by an a full size Blazer about a year later. I met my wife in 2001, I was taking her to meet my father for the first time, and a guy a street over from his house, a guy had a 73 in dark green. She asked "what kind of car is that?" "I really like it!". About 5 months later we were on a road trip to Connecticut to pick up her 73. She loves her Maverick! I miss mine!
In the early 80s in San Jose CA. two brothers who lived down the road used to duel regularly on the main road through my neighborhood. Older brother had a 71-72 Mach 1 with the NACA hood and a 4-Speed 351C and other stuff. The other brother had a 71-72 Grabber with a freakishly high winding 302 4-Speed gears and the works. I would be playing in the bushes and once or twice a week I'd see one of them roaring down the road seemingly testing something they had done to their car. On Saturday evenings you could pretty much count on seeing them tearing off together. Probably heading for that drag strip in Fremont or to some street races. That was the first time I remember being aware of Mavericks. I remember being disappointed when I discovered they weren't fast from the factory. They were legendary in my 10 year old mind
