I was looking over everything today and noticed that the negative cable is pinched pretty bad. It is held up against the firewall with a bolt and bracket and the bracket holding it has cut into the negative cable itself, exposing the insides of the cable. Could this be the root of all the evil? The positive from the selenoid to the starter looks pretty bad too.
I really dont want to spend the money on a new Alt. if I dont have to.

When you say you put a 'ground strap' on, do you mean you put a new negative cable on the battery to the moter, or do you mean you actually ran a cable from the body to the moter?

there should be a black cable going from battery to the solenoid....then one from the solenoid to the engine block...well thats how mine is...and the engine wont start without the block cable...

i would say replace the cables and see what happens....remember...a cable can look good...but if it is corroded internally...it stilla cts as if it isnt connected correctly..

good luck....i spent the better part of a 100 bucks troubleshooting mine when all it was was the cable to the block...

the pinched cables and grounding out is a good place to start

My black cable (negative) goes direct from battery to the engine block. It isnt on the solenoid at all. My positive red cable does go through the solenoid though.

That's the way my F100 is plus the one in my 72 Maverick with the 250 in it.
You also need to ground the car body to the engine block.

So grounding the engine block to the body might stop something like this?
I guess I will try anything right now.
