so my question would now be air shocks or regular shocks for the rear? anyone had both and want to express thier pros or cons please respond
dont use air shocks you will regret it. they will tear through your body and collapse on your tires NOOOOOO!NOOOO I ordered leaf springs and had them in 4 days , Brand new for your maverick. 3 or 4 leaf pack option.
I've used airshocks and never had any negative results. And that was on a 67 Stang, whose upper mounts are simply a hole thru the body.
Sooner or later that top mount will tear from the pan. If you are using the shocks for lift and clearence you will end up with repairs. Do a search and see what others have to say. Im not saying anyone is wrong for using air shocks but be forwarned of the dangers.
Yes this is very true. I've seen several with damage from air shocks. If you want to run them, build a brace from frame rail to frame rail and mount the brackets to it. Then you won't need to worry about tearing out the sheetmetal.
If you run around with a trunk fill of goodies, then yea, but if not, then they'll do fine, these cars are really light in the rear.
I feel your pain. I'm am going to try and add more leaf springs from an e150. I don't really know how many to add, but i'm going to try 2 of the larger springs. If anyone has done this .I could use sugestions of what is best. i don't want the rim to rub on the tire? It's bad. really bad. I also like your wheel caps where did you get them?
I blew the top shock mount out of my 1st Maverick with air shocks and too much weight. Empty would have just taken longer. As for springs, after I had the shock bracket repaired, I bought a pair of springs from an old Ford wagon and added a couple of those leaves to the Maverick main leaf with all new hardware. It jacked it up enough to clear the tires and wheels I was using at the time.
I think it will just take longer, like Shorty says. Take a look at the base of what the upper shock mounts are bolted to - it's just a piece of sheet metal spot welded to the car. That's what always tears out.
Ford must have made the body floor thinner in the Mavs then. I had air shocks on my 67 Stang for 9 years and they were doin fine when I sold the car.
air shocks have been on my car for 6 years and no problems.. i think it has do deal with how bad our floors are too.. how bout shackles and shock extenders.. i need some of those extenders and ill be running 275s
I just added a set of helper springs I'd already had bought for my 89 Ranger. They bolt onto the leafs behind the axle. Sure, they don't look kosher (so I painted em flat black, so they don't stick out like a sore thumb) but they did the job to gain enough clearance for the 15 x 10's and the 295/50's If you run the right backspaced wheels 275/50's will fit without spring shackles.
the insides of my rims are rusty and it leaks air from one of the tires gradually. First off, is this dangerous to drive on? second, if I buy new rims I was thinking 16's on the back and 15's on the front. Anyone know how wide of a tire I can get without them rubbing? (didn't even think of rubbing before this thread) I want the rear tires as wide as can be. Don't care about the fronts so much; They'll be thin. I have the original stock suspension in the rear lol. It will be rebuilt at some point. Is it worth waiting on the rims until I rebuild the suspension? I know that's alot, but any help would be great.
