The original poster ASKED.....so I responded with my opinion.

I am COLLECTOR of Maverick cars and their associated parts/accessories/collectibles. As a COLLECTOR I view these cars as something that should be cherished and preserved. Others can choose to drive their Maverick/Comet everyday. That is fine and O.K. with me. But...if somebody asks....I will give my opinion. In MY opinion....these 40 year old cars should not be used as daily drivers...and should not be used as a first car for a 16 year old. 30 years ago that would have been fine. But as a COLLECTOR, I don't see that as a proper use of these cars now. Just MY opinion.:Handshake

Votes are in decision has been made...

As a responsible parent, rational thinker, and all around nice guy not prone to nostalgic emotion over logic, we've made a decision...

Now with the car in hand, we're getting more serious about what we'll be changing down the road (no pun intended).

If - and I stress IF - we were to do a complete switch, can someone point us in the most SIMPLE direction?

I'm probably living in a dream world, but is there a more or less bolt-in combination for a late model 302 + AOD + Rear end with higher gearing to take advantage of the AOD?

    Ranger?
    Explorer?
    Mustang?

Other than the engine, the rest will require some work. AOD's need a different cross member, and a few other little things, no 8.8 is a direct bolt in, you'd be best just upgrading the gearing in your 8".

Look for an 87-93 mustang that was wrecked or parting out. get the long block engine and the transmission. Put a 4bbl manifold and carb on the engine and maybe the front drive accessories and timing cover to make it as simple of a bolt in as possible. All you will need to fabricate is a transmission crossmember, or get in touch with Frank (71gold) for one of his crossmembers. then you need a Lokar throttle cable and you are good. Search the threads on AOD swap for the details. Id keep the 8" rear like Dave said and put in some 3.89 gears.

Found this about the Mustang GT/302 Boss: Mustang GT's 17 mpg in the city/26 mpg on the highway

    Is the Maverick heavier?
