Does anyone know what kind of paint or coating was applied to the inside of differential housings? The 57-59 9 inch I'm re-doing has remnants of factory applied reddish orange paint on the indside of the housing. I assume to help differential fluid circulation and prevent housing metal from corroding and flaking into the fliud. I would like to recoat it with something that works well and will last. Any suggestions?
What like this? As far as I could tell it was just some sorta red primer, I used red Rust Buster paint, if you want some I still have 3/4 of the can left that you could use. I doubt it'll rust, it's covered in oil on the inside.
i would think it is the same stuff they use in motors and on heads...i was told it makes a nonporus surface so the oil can return to the bottom end quicker... the guy that balanced my rotating assy. gave me some...i didn't use it and if you need a name i will look tomorrow and post it... ...:Handshake...
* Thanks guys, Frank, Can you check if it was 'Glyptal' that you were given? What you described is what I'm assuming was on there.
* The pumpkin DID have remnants of that color on it, but the inside of the housing pot had stuff nearly the same color but mostly gone. [BTW I see some remnants of YOUR lubricant in the background there, Dave] * BTW I'll take you up on that offer..... *
I wonder how it got gone? My paint is still there. Is it a WAR case? If so, does it have a drain plug on the side?
Yes, Glyptal ..... outstanding for engine block insides to promote oil draining back to the pan quickly. Eastwood sells it........ but sit down when you see the price ....... $50 a quart! http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2298&itemType=PRODUCT
* * Yep, it's a WAR case with side drain plug and there's another on the bottom of the housing. I assume just age and wear and tear made it come off. It's not like there was paint chips in the fluid though there's just more of it in different pats of the housing.
the reason i didn't use it in mine was...i was not sure on how to prep for painting...if for some reason i missed a spot in prep, i didn't want a flake or two peeling off inside the motor... in the...rear chunk...it just gets ground up... ......
