The main differences are in the way they're equipped. A "Fairmont" 302 is basically the same as our Mavs (some rocker arm and compression differences), a "late 80's" 5.0 (i.e Mustang, Tbird, Crown Vic, et. al.) has some pretty significant differences (obviuosly fuel injection!) including crank triggered ignition, roller lifters (and an accompanying firing order change), chages in crankshaft balancing, serpentine belts with reverse rotation water pump to name a few...but still quite 'do-able' in a Maverick!
