ENGINE "KNOCK"

A former Ford dealer mechanic whom I trust pretty well, has my 77 Comet (250cu.in.*Automatic*A/C) running really good, but can't seem to get the knock out of exceleration. The vacuum advance is working, because when you really stomp on it, it stops. I notice that it seems to do this more when warmed up. I'm using 89 octane, surely I don't need super. Any ideas?
