When I put my engine in, I had a problem like yours. I did not line up the converted drain plug hole with the hole in the flex plate. When I tightened the flex plate, the drain plug bent the flex plate. The starter cranked over the engine and as soon as the engine fired the starter could not disengage from the bent flex plate. Had to replace the flex plate and the starter.
Like a bonehead, I almost did it again.
Check it out. I don't know if you have an auto trans or not.
