Craig, this seems to be pointing at a dash wiring problem...I would start my search by pulling the cluster and checking things from there out. You mention the gas guage still "working" and the ALT light on...sounds like voltage is present when it shouldn't be. Did you smell the smoke inside the car or outside? I have seen many a vintage car (Mavs and others) in the yards burned from the instrument panel out! Just saw an otherwise beautiful '64 Merc Marauder in the 'yard' this past Friday that had just fallen victim to this...
