Here's an example of how good these engines are. When I recently bought my Mav, it was 3 quarts low on oil. It also didn't have any water/coolant in the radiator. The previous owner said that he would put oil and water in it so I could take it home. Well, naturally he didn't. I picked it up at night thinking everything was done and drove it 25 miles to my home low on oil and with almost no coolant. When I got home and checked these things, I changed what was left of the oill and added water. NO PROBLEMS! Not a tap, whine, squeek, rattle or chatter. Good engine! It's a shame my son wants the V8. I'd leave the six in.

: Yes, it has a chain...

: : : the Ford straight 6 is the simplest most relaible motor I have evr run across. Mavericks were advertized as being simple and reliable too .they had a TV add in which a bunch of housewives took one apart.
: : :does it have a long lasting timing chain, it seems that the timing belt
: : is a great money maker for mechanics they charge 300$ or more to put one on
