289 reciprocating assemblies run well in 302 blocks, the lower cylinder skirt adds a *little* more resilance... the pistons can't rock in the bore as much as they can in the 289 blocks. like he said above, find out which 289 you have, the heads may have smaller combustion chambers and the exhaust should be a little more open, no air injection holes, less crap cluttering the exhaust ports. even the C code 289 can kick ass, just needs a little work done to it, in my opinion, has more potential than the 76.
289s rev a little better than 302s, 302 has more low end torque. what do you want out of this engine?
: Very good point on selling the 289 to a stang person. But you might want to establish which 289 it is. If it's a K engine, it is worth somewhat more. Second in hp was the C? motor and the lowest hp was the A? I am going from memory on this stuff, but you get my drift.
