when I did mine ( 302 to a 351) I removed and installed the engine and tranny as a unit. It is alot easyier that way. I did remove the starter though. just make sure that you have your motor mounts etc ready to go. ALso, when you pull out the drive sshaft, make sure you plug the hole out of the tranny. IF not you will be showered in tranny fluid. Even if you drain the pan it will still make a big mess. I took a rubber glove and tie strapped it to the cone. IT looked funny when the glove filled up, but it worked.

: When doing my 250CID to 302CID swap, I plan to remove old drivetrain and install new drivetrain as a unit (engine, transmission, bell housing and starter as a unit). is this less or more work?

: LESS IS BETTER

: I have never done it this way before. Is this possible from the top side?

: At the factory I beleive that they do this from the bottom.
