Paulie, as you have learned there are a whole lot of things that can be screwed up when doing an engine change. There are also a lot of items that can be broken or should be replaced... consequently cheaper usually isn't better, and if a guy can give you a fixed price I sure wouldn't trust him to do a good job. Where I work we have a $200 "extra parts" fee that we add to every engine job. That way if we think something needs to be replaced (hoses, belts, etc) we can do it. Anything extra is refunded to the customer. If Mechanic #1 quotes you a rigid price, he might be inclined to 'rig' something rather than replace it to stick to his quote. -CP

: I've been calling round getting quotes and have narrowed it down to two.
: Mech 1: $400 straight up to drop in engine/tranny, knows the situation, understands Mavs and does modifications. I asked him if he wanted to actually see the car before he made a comitment but he says he doesn't need to. 25 years experiance, does modifications as well as repairs. Not as open to discussion, lives maybe 10 miles from here.
: Mech 2: $400-500, depends on exactly how the car looks, not overly familiar with Mavs but 45 years in the buisness. 2 day turn around best case senerio. Lives probably same distance.
: Leaning twords #1 just because he gave me a straight up but I'm just looking for input.
