I would also like to add that a car will run without the battery hooked up with an alternator because the bushings will hold some residual magnetism.Generators have permanent magnet bushings in them so they will run pretty much indefinitely with the battery unhooked(once you get it started that is).So this is an inaccurate way to test an altenator.The best way is with a multimeter.Be sure to also check for ac ripple using the ac function on the meter.Put the test leads on the battery posts.If you get any ac reading (fluctuating or otherwise)then you have a bad altenator.
