Steering gear box adjustment

In the past several people have asked about adjusting the gear box because their steering was so loose. I tried to "call up" the archives but I couldn't get them to load up. If I want to take the slack out of the steering I need to loosen the nut that holds the adjusting screw firmly in place, but how far and in what direction (CW or CCW) should I turn the adjusting screw? Thanks
