This procedure is most often needed only on manual steering cars. If you have slack in a power steering car, it is usually in the ball socket on the steering linkage. You can usually check this by watching the steering linkage while someone is slightly turning the steering wheel back and forth inside the car for you.
As you know, the adjusting nut has to be backed off. Be careful when backing this nut off that the adjusting screw isn't backing out with it...hold it in place with a screwdriver while backing the nut off. Once the nut is backed off, the screw generally will go in quite easily (clockwise) and you should adjust it in until you can feel some restriction (usually 1/2 to a complete turn), lock the nut down while not letting the screw turn, and check the slack in the steering wheel before going any further. If you still have excessive slack you can always try adjusting it a little bit tighter...just don't get carried away. If this adjustment doesn't take care of the problem and you are sure it's in the gear box...replace it. Good luck, Ray _________________________________________________________ :In the past several people have asked about adjusting the gear box because their steering was so loose. I tried to "call up" the archives but I couldn't get them to load up. If I want to take the slack out of the steering I need to loosen the nut that holds the adjusting screw firmly in place, but how far and in what direction (CW or CCW) should I turn the adjusting screw?
