Well,I have a pretty damn stock 289 in my 65 mustang,ANd i have a 302 in my 72 comet gt.Okay the comet gt is bored 30 over, comp cams 280h cam and springs, polished and ported heads,2500 stall, performer rpm intake, holley 750 cfm..And i still think my 289 runs stronger..The 289 just builds the power quicker!!!!you have to turn more rpms to do the same thing in the 302....Its like the 289 has instant throtle response,You touch the gas you going to go!!

: I have a 68 Mustang with a 302 4V (230 hp), the only 289 that can out do this engine is the Hi-Po 289(installed in various Ford from 64-67) , this 289 engine had 271hp stock, and the Shelby's had Hi-Po 289's that had 306 hp , and not to mention the Supercharged 66 Shelby with 440hp. But , the 289 4V(none Hi-Po) was only 225 hp , 5 less than my 302 , with 10 ft. lbs. of torque less than mine as well. The only thing the Hi-Po 289 has over my engine is : the nodular iron crank, balancer, bigger cam, dual point dist., higher flow exhuast manifolds, and the intake manifold with carb. not to mention it is almost impossible to find because of it's low numbers. The regular 289's had the same balancer , heads, intake, exhuast minfols, cam, and carb., and I would recommend going with the 302 because of the increased stroke, and not to mention the 289 hasn't been produced in over 30 years making it harder to find.No adventage going to a 289 when you can have a 302, install a nice cam , headers, dual point dist. , aluminuim intake holley carb.(don't exceed 600 cfm for the street) and you will have a very nice engine.
