:I was told its a nine inch rearend - but looking at the bolt pattern its a "square circle" rather then a circle pattern. So i am thinking its the stock 8" rearend. I am gonna be going to the junkyard next month to buy a third member and rebuild it with 3.73:1 gears - or if i can get one cheap - i will buy a new one. Anyways can anyone tell me what the 8" rearends came with in 1974? I.E. spline count ect ect... I am also looking at getting a locker rear for full time posi. I was told this one is posi but haven't check it and the only time i have broken the tires loose it did not leave the twin marks. So i figure while i am taking car of that end i will add a posi. Any recomendations on what locker or posi unit that is cheap and good for under 500rwhp total?
: : : :Thanks : : :David, the 8" came in many ford cars and trucks, some of which are the pickups, Torinos, vans, Mercury mid size etc. of the late 60s, thru 70s mostly. For id, the door jamb tag will have a number denoting the ratio with a letter for the posi if equipped. The spline count is 28. ..It has been shown that often when horsepower and torque reach the 400 hp area under drag strip conditions (as with 4000 rpm launchs etc.) that the axles are near there limit and gear problems start subject to individal conditions of gearing, traction, weight etc. ..There are a number of sources for complete 3rd members at around $500 +/-. ..If you had not done this before (rear setup), new friction discs, pinion hardware, dial indicator with mounting fixture, torque wrench and a well mounted vise and setup info are needed. Good luk, Ken |
