I recently disassembled a 1974 302. In this motor I found what is known as an oil slinger. THe little piece that slides onto the crank after the crank timing gear but before the timing cover and harmonic balancer. In addition, the timing cover has what I call a drip rail that collects oil that then drips down on the the crank timing gear. On the newer fuel injected timing covers I found the same "drip rail" but no oil slinger. I'm using the 1974 timing cover on my newer 5.0 so I can use the oil dipstick to check the oil level (due to the front sump oil pan). I believe the older 302 and 289 engines had oil slingers but no drip rail. The 74 seems to have had both. What do you guys and gals think as far as installing the slinger on a newer 5.0 with the old timing cover. I don't see why it needs a slinger if the original system didn't have one. Any thoughts? |
