hey yall,
been a long time since ive been on this board. its spring here now, and i'm finally getting around to making improvements and tuning the "neglected" maverick.
i had previously sought advice on what the best carb/intake combo was for a bone stock V8 maverick. i got lots of comments and suggestions, and i appreciate them all. (even if i didnt use it)
considering your advice, past experience, and past experience of other small block ford owners...
i went with an edelbrock "performer 289" and a 500cfm (yep a small one) edelbrock 4V.
the results are astounding! my little maverick now burns rubber all the way thru 1st gear, and usually snatches 2nd. this is not manually shifted either.
i am going to have to improve my tires next. considering how sloppy the handling is, the relative lack of braking quality, and all that torque going to back wheel... it will be manditory.
i'd just like put my seal of approval on this particular combo. i am quite impressed. bigger is not necessarily better. i once put an edelbrock performer intake, and a holley #1850 (600cfm) on a mustang, and the car was actually slower than when it had a 2V.
i am sure i could have made a 600 cfm carb work, but i'd had to jet it down and be constantly tinkering to get it right. i am sure my low end response wouldnt be what i'm enjoying now, and fuel economy would suffer too.
as far as intakes are concerned... i got the performer because i got it cheap/used ($30). everyone is finding out that this intake is a dog in comparison to either the "performer RPM" or the "weiand stealth".
however, the performer is great for a stock or only "mildly modified" engine.
the edel/edel combo i used was a hit, right out of the box. as a matter of fact, without doing any fine tuning, im elated with the result. (more power still on tap)
i just thought i'd pass this along to anyone considering a 4V conversion. if you arent going to do much more than an intake/carb change, this is as good as your gonna do.
* stealth and RPM manifolds are really good. they will not severely hurt your lowend torque, but they do so much for your top end.
id have preferred one of these intakes, but i couldnt get one for $30. (lol)
