Depends on what the year is exactly. 1963-5 Comets were the same as the 65-66 Mustangs, and only 289 Hi-Po cars had 9 inch rears. 1966-up Comets were Fairlanes. I am not sure if all of those cars had 9 inch rears. The only sure way is to get under the car and check. A 9-inch center section's pinion is lower and you cannot put a socket on the bottom nut. On an 8-inch a socket will fit.
If you are SURE it came with a Detroit Locker (not just a posi or traction-lok, but a REAL detroit locker), then I beleive it has to be a 9-inch and it has to be a Hi-Po 289.
If it is a Hi-Po, then it'd be worth putting in your Maverick, but probably out of your price range. There is a way of telling a Hi-Po by its balancer, I am not sure but someone here probably knows.
The 4-speed would be a Toploader. They're great transmissions and if the car is 1963-1965, then it'll be the right size for your Grabber.

: I know where I can get a rear-end from a mid-60s Comet "Caliente"... it came factory with Detroit Locker. From what I have read, the Caliente is a fairly rare bird, but this one is a total rust-bucket, so parting out is justified. Can anyone tell me if this is a 9-inch? I would be using the center-section only, with Granada or Versailles axles.
: P.S. The same car has a factory 4-speed. Would it be worth the effort to yank the tranny and think about putting it into my Grabber?
: Any advice?
