Maverick Survey.... Redesigning the the Mav for the 21st Century....

Righty guys, For my transportation design class I have opted to "redesign" the Maverick... Keeping with the original basic ideal (economical yet somewhat sporty, low matainance *stop laughing!*.... you get the idea) What would you change about the Maverick if you could? For example, trading the full bench for a split one.... My roomie can't ride in Alice when I drive because the seat has to be so close to the pedals)... How about engines? I don't know what the "newer" model cars have... give me my V-8! I'd like suggestions for basic models, and higher end performance as well... All serious suggestions welcome!
